Ready to Rent
A supported step towards a home of your own.
Getting a private rental usually depends on a rental history and steady references, and that history is hard to build without stable housing to begin with. For people who’ve experienced homelessness, or a time when housing has fallen away, the private market can be a difficult one to return to.
Ready to Rent offers a supported path forward. It provides transitional housing for individuals and families across the Greater Darwin region: a stable place to live while building the skills, confidence and rental history to move into a long-term home, alongside practical tenancy support to maintain it.
Whether you’re looking into this for yourself, or you’re a family member, carer or support worker exploring it for someone else, the program works towards the same thing: a tenancy each person can hold and manage on their own terms. Most participants are with Ready to Rent for six to twelve months. Progress is reviewed regularly, and the focus stays on being ready for the move before it happens.
Who it’s for
Ready to Rent is for people who are:
- 18 years or over, or families
- living in the Greater Darwin Region
- currently experiencing or at risk of homelessness
- looking to move into the long-term rental market
- facing barriers to finding or keeping a private rental whether due to social, personal or systemic factors
What we offer
Ready to Rent brings together a stable place to live and practical, tenancy-focused support so you have the best possible chance of finding and keeping a home in the community.
The program includes:
- A stable place to live - Supported transitional accommodation options across Greater Darwin, offering a safe and stable base for the length of the program
- Tenancy and recovery support – Culturally secure, one-on-one support shaped around each person’s pace and goals, covering both the everyday realities of holding a tenancy and wellbeing along the way.
- Individual recovery and capacity building plans – Personalised plans with regular goal review and planning focused for long-term, stable housing outcomes
- Warm referrals to other supports - Supported connections to health, employment, education and community services, as needed throughout the program
- Support after the move- up to three months of aftercare once someone has settled into long-term housing, so no one makes that move alone.
Not sure whether this is the right fit? Reach out anyway. We’ll talk it through and help you find support that suits you.
Rent to Live is delivered by TeamHEALTH, with funding from the Northern Territory Department of Children and Families.
