Our Sub-Acute Residential Services offer a safe, recovery-oriented space for people experiencing mental health challenges - providing short-term, stabilising support to help bridge the gap between hospital and home.
Top End House - Psychosocial Recovery Programs
TeamHEALTH's Top End House in Darwin provides two tailored psychosocial rehabilitation accommodation programs - Papaya and Jacaranda - designed to support adults living with mental ill-health in their recovery. Both programs offer structured, person-centred support in a safe, therapeutic environment, with a strong focus on skill-building, confidence, and community reintegration.
Papaya - Medium-Term Sub-Acute Psychosocial Support
A short-term accommodation and recovery program for adults aged 18-64, providing intensive psychosocial support for 8-12 weeks. Papaya supports people who are:
- Becoming unwell in the community (Step-Up)
- Transitioning from hospital back into community living (Step-Down)
Supports include:
- Connection with primary health care and other service providers
- Assistance with medication management, housing, finances, and employment
- Daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, and personal care
- Community participation and social connection
- Educational programs
- Wellbeing and recreational activities
- Support connecting with health services and applying for the NDIS
Located in Darwin, close to shops, cafes, and public transport.
Jacaranda - Long-Term Psychosocial Transitional Living
A 6-12-month psychosocial rehabilitation program supporting individuals with severe and enduring mental illness. Jacaranda offers stable accommodation with a focus on daily living support independence with a focus on daily living support, independence, and ongoing recovery.
Supports include:
- Connection to primary health care providers and clincal services
- Daily life skills development and confidence building
- Medication management
- Community engagement and wellbeing and fitness activities
- Assistance applying for NDIS supports, including Supported Independent Living (SIL)
- Educational programs provided by TeamHEALTH and other service providers
Located in Darwin, with close access to community facilities and public transport.
Who Can Access These Programs?
Referrals are accepted for people who:
- Are aged 18-64
- Live in the Northern Territory
- Have a diagnosed mental illness or are experiencing ongoing mental health challenges
- Are case managed by Top End Mental Health Service (TEMHS)
Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC)
Located in a peaceful area in the northern suburbs of Darwin, PARC offers a 28-day residential program combining clinical and psychosocial support.
The PARC model is designed for people either:
- People who mental health has declined, where intensive support in a sub-acute environment like PARC can help avoid a hospital admission (a Step-Up)
- Transitioning from hospital care (The Royal Darwin Hospital Inpatients Unit, Cowdy Ward or the Joan Ridley Unit) back to the community (Step-Down)
This therapeutic setting is ideal for people aged 18-64 with a diagnosed mental illness who need short-term recovery-oriented accommodation.
Supports include:
- Connection with primary health care and other service providers
- Support with housing, financial, employment matters
- Medication support and health management
- Educational programs provided by TeamHEALTH and other service providers
- Participants are supported to take part in daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and looking after their personal care, to gain confidence and skills needed to live independently in the community
- Support and encourage wellbeing and fitness through preferred activities
- Participation in the community such as meeting new people and social outings
Eligibility and Referrals:
Referrals to PARC are accepted only from Top End Mental Heath Services (TEMHS) for eligible participants living in the NT who:
- Are aged 18-64
- Have a case manager within Top End Mental Health Service (TEMHS) or
- Have been admitted to Hospital as a mental health patient and need support with their post discharge recovery (a Step-Down referral)
