What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and carers. The NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life. It will support people with disability to build skills and capability so they can participate in the community and employment.
The NDIS will provide about 6000 Territorians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life. TeamHEALTH has an NDIS ready approach and plan so we can support people to take up the opportunities that the NDIS will offer.
In the Northern Territory, the NDIS will be rolled out geographically. People will move into the NDIS at different times depending on where they live. The roll out will start in January 2017 in the East Arnhem region along with some supported accommodation in the Darwin urban area. This will be followed by;
- Darwin Remote and Katherine regions in July 2017
- Darwin Urban and Central Australia regions in July of 2018
The NDIS will be operating Territory-wide by July 2019.
